Tunisia - Central Tunisia

Tunisia’s central region is dominated by the Tell and Saharan Atlas mountain ranges. Its extraordinary dramatic scenery includes the dense Aleppo pine forest around Jebel Zaghouan, the lush oases of Gafsa, and the flat-topped mountain Jugurtha’s Table.

The area also contains one of Islam’s holiest cities, Kairouan, as well as the magnificent Roman remains at Dougga, Sbeitla and Thuburbo Majus , all of which are well worth a visit.

Kairouan is Central Tunisia’s largest town, located to the northwest of the Sebkhel de Sidi El Hani Lake, and Le Kef is a close second just 45 km (28 miles) from the Algerian border.

In recent times, Central Tunisia has come to be one to the country’s most important historical sites, with a seemingly endless array of ancient temples, theatres and baths that are just waiting to be explored.
