Luminous jellyfish

Pelagia noctiluca

Jellyfish with a domeshaped, wavy-edged float. The long, thin tentacles have powerful stinging cells. Pink or pinkishyellow with numerous blotches. If blown in by the wind it sometimes concentrates around shorelines.

Maximum size 15 centimeters diameter.

Rhizostoma pulmo

This is the biggest of the Mediterranean jellyfishes and is easily identified by its big, purple-edged, translucent float. The arms are quite large and jagged. Not uncommon close to the shore during the summer months. Weak sting.

Maximum size: 60 centimeters diameter.

Vélelle

Velella velella

Colonial hydrozoan which floats on the surface of the sea. Made up of a basal lamina surrounded by short tentacles and a laminal expansion which emerges from the water rather like a sail. It forms huge banks which can be pushed to shore by the wind.

Bluish-white, measures up to 7 centimeters.

Cassiopeia

Cotyloruiza tuberculata

This jellyfish is easily recognised by its discoid float which is raised in the center, and for the numerous short tentacles ending in small bluey-purple dises. The float is yellowishwhite. Not uncommon along the shoreline during the summer months.
