Great white shark

Carcharodon carcharias

Large, man-eating shark. Typically greyish in color on the dorsal region and very pale, practically white on the belly. It lives preferably at depths between the surface and 200 meters and is frequently present in coastal waters. Feeds on large pelagic fish (for example, tuna) and cetaceans. Its migrations appear to be linked with temperature changes.

Reaches lengths of over 7 meters.

Large shark easily recognised by its caudal fin, with a very large  upper lobe making up almost half the total length of the animal. Bluish-grey on the back and whitish underneath. Lives in surfs waters both out at sea and close to the coast.

Gobius bucchichii

 Elongated body covered in rough scales. Large head with bulging cheeks. Light yellowish-grey, with small dark blotches, some on the eyes. Found on sandy-muddy bottoms and around Neptune grass, alongside Anemonia sulcata.

Maximum size 10 centimeters.

Very tapering body, with small head and almost vertical front profile. Feathered tentacle over each eye. Whitish with a dark, longitudinal band. Lives on rocky bottoms from 2-3 meters deep to 40 meters.

Callionymus lyra

 Elongated body with wide, flattened, triangular head. Male fish have a very high forward dorsal fin.
No scales on the body. Yellowish-brown; females have greenish blotches and males blue during the mating period. Found on sandy and muddy bottoms from 10-15 meters to 400.

Maximum size 30 centimeters.

Solid body, slightly compressed at the rear. Large head, flat back. Has a retractile tentacle inside the mouth which acts as hait for small fish. Greyish-brown. Found on sandy and muddy bottoms, from 15 meters to 250.

Gobius geniporus

Slimline goby covered with rough scales. Large, rounded head with 4 numerous pores on the cheeks. Marbled brown with dark blotches. Green pupil. Found on sandy-muddy bottoms and close to posidonia meadows, from 10 meters to 50.

Maximum size 16 centimeters.

Small tunny with tapered body. Very wide mouth. The two dorsal fins are set very close together. Metallic blue with dark stripes on the back and silver sides and belly. Lives in coastal waters from the surface down to depths of 200 meters.

Maximum size 90 centimeters.

Robust, spindle-shaped body, without scales except for the front of the body and the lateral fine. Bluish back, with an irregular pattern of stripes of blotches, and silvery-grey sides and belly.  Lives in coastal waters from the surface down to 50 meters.

Maximum size 1 meter.

Bothus podas

Flatfish with eyes on the left-hand side, but set obliquely. Front head profile is almost straight, especially in mature males. Brownish with numerous different colored blotches, from white to bluish to yellow. Found on sandy-muddy and detrital bottoms, from 10-15 meters to 400.

Maximum size 45 centimeters.

Flatfish, almost circuler in shape, with eyes on the left side of the head. Wide, oblique mouth. Body covered with bony tubercles. Reddish-grey, but changes according to the bottom, as this is e highly mimetic fish. Lives on sandy and detrital bottoms, from 20-30 meters to 100.

Maximum size 100 centimeters.

Large fish with robust. tapered. body. Caudal peduncie has a serves of dorsal and ventral pinnules. Bluish back and silvery white sides and belly. Lives in pelagic waters in shoals. from depths of a few meters clown to 40-50 meters.

Wide, oval body, highly compressed and covered in thick, rough, scales. Pointed nose and strong incisors. Forward dorsal fin has large spiny rays which can be blocked in the erect position. Blue-grey and marbled, with blotches on the fins. Found close to rocky bottoms, from 4-5 meters to 100.

Maximum size 45 centimeters.

Black scorpionfish

Stout-shaped body, typical of the scorpionfish. Distinctive large fleshy excrescences above the eyes and a marked socket around them.Blackish-brown with darker blotches. Found on rocky and detrital bottoms and amongst Neptune grass, from 3-4 meters to over 100.

Maximum size 30 centimeters.
